I loved the opportunity of going behind the scenes at Ruby Orchids, here in beautiful Aotearoa New Zealand: https://youtu.be/J4HcjbI0mTA
And so, the journey continues! To discover how our amazing cymbidium orchids are grown has really opened my eyes and given me, a floral designer, a greater appreciation of just how much work is involved. I walked away with an arm full of orchids and now have great honour in sharing the many wonderful ways that they can be used in floral designs.
For the container, see my previous video on Rustic paint finishing a metal urn: https://youtu.be/7JnWH2ftH00TBH - the rust works a treat on most surfaces.
This is a wonderful design and although the preferred size to width and height should be around 1 ½ times the height or widths – whichever is the greater of the container, often these rules can be broken if the completed design is within the boundaries of the width or opening. What I’m really meaning to say here is, just keep the design, rounded or to appear as if just resting on the top.
Things to gather:
- Container of your choice. If the container isn’t water proof, or has a difficult to work in ‘opening’, like the one I used, all you need to do is find another container that will easily hold foam, secure using ‘oasis-tape’, and place down inside cavity of container.
- A couple of lengths of vine of your choice.
- A bit of moss or Spanish moss as demonstrated.
- Twisty willow – optional but it does give additional movement to the completed design.
- And foliage to ties and content in with your orchids.
- I really love that finally, I can offer up designs, knowing that you too can purchase these beauties, globally.
- Orchids – I used 3 stems, but if the orchids are long, with lots of florets you might get away with 1 or 2.
A special note of thanks to both New Zealand Blooms and Ruby Orchids NZ for giving up your valuable time at such a busy time of the year, to share what’s involved in growing the orchids we so love to create with. Ruby Orchids are available exclusively through New Zealand Bloom.
