I think that of all the floral designs of the past Constance Spry opened our eyes the most to breaking all the rules and freeing us up to using whatever the botanical world produced. She was the one who said "The difference between a weed and a flower is a mere opinion," I love that quote and say what is wrong with using hedge row botanicals? I think nothing and say we should embrace whatever we desire.
In this design I’m using 2 pink fresh cymbidium orchids along with preserved hydrangea, cotton branches, salal, poppy seeds and a couple of pieces of whitish stems of hanging amaranthus. The combination might seem odd, but visually the end result is most attractive.
Before I depart, I must just extend a big note of thanks to Ruby Orchids and
Caroline for her time in helping to solve a few mysteries I’ve had for years –
Where do our flowers come from and how are they grown and what’s involved. If I don’t have flowers I desire in my garden or I need many, then it’s just a matter of wondering off to the market and there I can pretty much acquire whatever I need. Once again, a big thank you to Ruby Orchids NZ & New Zealand Blooms for the opportunity of going behind the scenes to experience the close-up beauty of the most magnificent orchids. If only thing I have a greater appreciation of the time and work involved in growing these so that we floral designers have what our artistic minds desire. Ruby Orchids are available exclusively through New Zealand Bloom.
