What’s not to love about Autumn and the Fall? Spring provided us with crisp clean colours. The summer offered up bright intensive full-on hues, but with the heat leaving the sun, the botanical world provides us with lovely warm mutations of raw umber, golden mellowing yellows and of course an amazing array of full on wonderful cosy oranges and heart-warming dynamic reds. I think it should be called the season of abundance. Outdoor summer jobs are finished, the harvest is usually in, jams pickles and preserves line the cupboards and soon the fires will roar as we settle in for the winter. Nature really is grand with what she provides seasonally.
This design is so easy to make and takes only a few components to achieve great impact but the best thing, it’s not too big and if space is an issue at your place, then this ‘forever’ topiary is just perfect!
Things to gather:
- Terracotta pot and saucer to fit. Mine is 8” high with an opening of 5 or 6” .
- Liquid NO-Nails or similar to glue saucer to base of terracotta pot.
- PVC pipping or a heavy cardboard cylinder which will form the topiary trunk or stem. Mine is 20” long x just over 2” + if using cardboard, you will need to seal the base end with plastic food wrap or similar.
- Artificial hydrangea and magnolia leaves
- Hot glue gun and sticks to glue above to cylinder to create trunk of topiary.
- Water tight plastic container – small enough to fit down inside terracotta pot.
- Plaster of Paris, water to mix and stirring stick. Plaster/water ratio – 2 parts plaster to 1 part water mixed to form a pancake consistency.
- 3 stems of fall coloured hydrangeas.
- 2 stems of hydrangea foliage.
- 2 stems of artificial pears/apples – I used green pears to connect back into the leaves used to create topiary trunk.
- Moss or wood chip/bark to cover workings
