Floristry Tutorial: White Amaryllis, ivy and hanging amaranthus in a tall black vase

Channels / Flowers & Floristry Tutorials

White, tall, stately and elegant is the request from Maria! We’ve had a chat and both agreed that the large amaryllis or hippeastrum blooms make the perfect statement to grace the dark wood panelling in her dining room. Whites or light-coloured blooms are usually the best at lighting or lifting dark spaces & green is always great at balancing and harmonising or connecting black and whites together. Maria also has a plain black vase 24” tall with a narrow opening. It is currently home to several stems of hanging white amaranthus – that look wrong. The request, how can I bring everything together and stop the amaryllis all falling down into the vase – her words, ‘it just keeps looking like a big fat round white ball sitting on top of a black vase. I’ve tried to pack out the surplus space with paper, but they still keep slipping. How can I fix this, can I still use the amaranthus, and how long do I make the ivy?’

These issues can be solved and it’s super easy. So, I’m here to help not only Maria, but everyone else who might find themselves in the same predicament!
- The design has 5 white amaryllis
- 3 stems of white hanging amaranthus
- Several long trails of ivy
- to sort the slipping issue – several garden plant supports or bamboo sticks
- cable ties to fix bamboo to extend the stem lengths of the amaryllis
