This might sound like an odd kind of a name for a floral design but… I love the great outdoors and when we were at Ruby Orchids my eyes fall upon a really dark and unusual colour cymbidium orchids called Tuscany. On closer examination I immediately thought of our gorgeous native bush here in Aotearoa New Zealand. The colour reminded me of brackish water and freshly picked over soil. If you’ve ever seen a Kiwi bird in the wild, you’ll understand what I’m on about. Their very long beaks make for wonderful grabbing and rooting up the soil as they dig away for bugs etc.

Thus the name 'Tramper’s Delight' - magical moments when you actually see ‘things’ unearthed by the Kiwi. To me this design represents New Zealand!

You will need:
- A log plater container: https://amzn.to/3EgYfrH
- Foam or chicken wire to fill cavity of container: https://amzn.to/43gY1M5
- Moss to cover workings.
- 1 stems of Tuscany cymbidium orchids.
- A few succulents, a bit of foliage to tone in with the orchids and perhaps a bit of mossy tree bark.
- Optional – couple of dried or preserved banksia or protea heads.

I must just extend a big note of thanks to Ruby Orchids and Caroline for her time in helping to solve a few mysteries I’ve had for years – Where do our flowers come from and how are they grown and what’s involved? If I don’t have flowers I desire in my garden or I need many, then it’s just a matter of wondering off to the market and there I can pretty much acquire whatever I need. Once again, a big thank you to Ruby Orchids NZ & New Zealand Blooms for the opportunity of going behind the scenes to experience the close-up beauty of the most magnificent orchids. If only thing I have a greater appreciation of the time and work involved in growing these so that we floral designers have what our artistic minds desire. Ruby Orchids are available exclusively through New Zealand Bloom.
