After a long winter there is no other flower that lifts my spirit other than this flowering shrub! The whites and pink blooms really are a delight. In this design I just wanted to share what I do with them so that they can reign supremely. TBH they need nothing but themselves to bring a smile to my face or a touch of early spring to any room.

Things to gather:
- I used a very tall slender footed glass vase. As an aside it’s possibly the only time of year that this vase is brought from the back of the vase cupboard. Although a lovely shape, it’s a difficult container to work in.
- I have found a great solution to using it to hold flowers. It’s called gluing a heavy metal pin holder or flower frog to the internal base cavity. Use clear liquid ‘no-nails’ glue. It takes about 24 hours to fully cure, but once set, it’s rock solid.
- Several stems of Pieris or commonly known as lily of the valley tree.

Pieris or lily of the valley or Pieris japonica is a plant of many names. Also known as Japanese andromeda, flame of the forest or lily-of-the-valley bush, this striking evergreen shrub looks good all year round. With its attractive foliage and sprays of spring flowers, it’s a wonderful foliage flower to design with.

Some say you need a bit of imagination but to me, it does indeed look like lily of the valley (Convallaria majalis) and like the ground-covering perennial, come in white or pink and appears come the +spring. Although the lily of the valley might have a wonderful fragrance, this too has its own unique perfume.

And in the language of flowers, like the lily of the valley it represents return to happiness & that’s exactly how I feel come the spring when they return to my garden ready to bring inside so that I can be returned to memories of my nan.
